$$$, Don Angie – West Village Modern Italian Pasta Joint
As a big lover of Italian food, I’m in constant search of a new Italian restaurant.
This time for our monthly girls night out, I didn’t want to go to an osteria-style venue. Instead, I was looking for something cool, with a modern touch and more creative cooking approach. When I heard about Don Angie – a New Italian, husband & wife pasta joint in West Village, I had no doubt it was exactly what I was looking for. Scott Tacinelli and Angie Rito give traditional Italian cuisine a little twist, not only in terms of style and representation but also flavor and ingredients of their playful dishes, combining Italian heritage with modern innovation.
Pasta is definitely favored here – candy looking caramelle with buffalo-milk ricotta and persimmon, garganelli with a meatball sauce or mouth melting stracchino gnocchi are so delicious you will be tempted to lick your plate. The wine list is focused entirely on Italian wines or American made using Italian grapes. Pithos Rosso (COS, Sicily) paired really well with Freekeh and Chicories salad, and Dolcetto (G.D.Vajra, Piedmont) wonderfully accompanied our pasta and veggie dishes. There were not so many dessert options, but plenty of sweet wines and amari which I really want to come back for.
Don Angie is a lovely restaurant with a simple but stylish design. Large windows and super-sized mirrors visually make the space seem bigger. Checkered floor, marble bar and gold and wooden elements give off some retro vibes and keep it simply chic. The music is a little loud, but certainly helps to create fun and amusing atmosphere.
So, if you look for great Italian food and a fun bustling atmosphere, look no further.
